ARISE & SHINE as the 3A* DISCIPLE ” – 2014 Theme

It is important in life & ministry to ‘selah/pause’: to look back & reflect on where we have been & what we have learn from the past rather than just keep on going like an unthinking machine. Even machines cannot go on forever without breaking down. Here are my reflections.

We praise the Lord for the completion of the first cycle of ‘Growing RICE’ ( 2005-08 ) which is our Mission Statement .

  • God led us forward by His FIRE for the next 5 years ( 2009-2013 ).

FIRE is a metaphor for God (Is.33:14-16; Heb.12: 28-29). FIRE was the symbol of His Empowering Presence . FIRE is ‘Back to the Basics’ of Spiritual Disciplines & our relationship with the three persons of the Trinity.

  • The important question is WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? RICE & FIRE are the basics of our calling & the spiritual disciplines needed to grow as His Disciples. How do we know we have grown & are TRULY HIS DICIPLES?
  • Jesus often reminded His disciples: Blessed are those who hear & practice (obey),he is like a wise man. (Luke 11:28; 6:46). The challenge before us is to practise & obey what we know & allow the truth to transform our lives. Like the people of God, we must now ARISE & SHINE for the glory of the Lord.
  • HOW do we ARISE & SHINE and reflect that we are truly his disciples? The Lord spoke through John 15, reminding us to continue to abide in Jesus. This coming year, we focus on the 3A STAR* DISCIPLE & CHURCH.
  • The 3A* DISCIPLE was part of Jesus’ ‘farewell teaching’ to His Disciples immediately before he faced the Cross. It is marked by 3As to aid us in our memory & journey of being ‘truly His disciples’.

Abiding relationship – becoming like Jesus- Friend

Asking whatever – boldness in prayer-Father

Authentic love- bearing much- Fruit

  • Abiding re l ations with Jesus is spiritual formation. This is a whole-life process of being connected with Jesus & becoming like him. What a privilege he calls us his friends when we obey his commands v14-15
  • Asking whatever & growing in boldness in our prayers. ‘Without Jesus, we can do nothing.’ v5b. May the Father continues to help us in the school of prayerful dependence on Jesus.
  • Authentic love is the act of joyful obedience to the love of God. We are commanded to love one another as Christ has loved us. v12,17. The keywords are to remain in Jesus & bear much fruit for the Father’s glory & show ourselves to be his Disciples v8. The process also involves ‘pruning’ so that we show ‘focus’ fruits.

“Arise & Shine for the Glory of the Lord has risen – Isaiah 60:1

This is to my Father’s Glory , that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples- John15:8”

Have an inspiring & fruitful ‘ARISE & SHINE’ Year of Discipleship 14.
