Church Theme:
‘JOURNEY by FIRE- Stage 2’
We praise the Lord for the completion of the first cycle of ‘Growing RICE’ which is our Mission Statement. This is the reason for our existence and it is based on the Biblical foundation of The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and The Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31).

RICE is reaching, integrating, community, empowerment- the basics of an intentional disciple making church.

As we ‘Journey on’ the next cycle, we trust the Lord to guide us by FIRE. FIRE is a metaphor for God (Isaiah 33:14-16; Hebrews.12: 28-29) and when God’s people were in the Wilderness, they were guided by a Pillar of Cloud by day and a Pillar of Fire by night (Exodus 13:21; Nehemiah 9:19) . They were totally dependent on God in their Journey to the Promise Land. FIRE was the symbol of His Presence with the people. In the same way, we look to God to lead us forward by His FIRE for the next 4 years. FIRE stands for

  • Friendship with God: in Prayer (Father)
  • Inspired through Word: in Scripture (Son- Jesus)
  • Renewed by Spirit: in Fruit & Gifts (Holy Spirit)
  • Empowered to Serve: in Church & World (Ministry)

FIRE is ‘Back to the Basics’ of Spiritual Disciplines & our relationship with the three persons of the Trinity.

In 2010, at Stage 2, our Priority is on ‘Inspired through the Word’ and the main teaching will focus on our relationship with Jesus, the Living Word. The key text guiding us is from 2 Timothy3:16-17- that ‘All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching & rebuking (belief); correcting & training (behaviour) so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.’

We pray that you will JOIN US in this ‘Journey of Friendship with God.’ What a tremendous privilege and honour to be on this Journey of friendship and discipleship. (John15:14-15)

Have an inspiring New Year 2010.

March is Social Concern Month at CCiL, and Carelinks Sunday was observed by Mandarin, English, Cantonese and Hounslow Congregation at the third annual joint service in Worship and Ministry Centre (WMC) on 15 March, 2009. The aim of Carelinks Sunday is to promote awareness in our church about certain community and world issues, most of which fall into the categories of physical, material and spiritual poverty.

In addition, our hope is that our brothers and sisters in CCiL will recognise that we can each play a part in bringing God's love to the poor, weak and needy. The Carelinks Committee is here to offer some tools and build links with partner organisations through which we can each take action in the community, whether at home or abroad (see Carelinks booklet in PDF for details).

If you are excited about seeing where God is leading us in this aspect of His work, we invite you to begin by joining us in prayer. To help you get started, here are two prayer points:

Please pray that as we learn more about the various tools and organisations that work in the community, brothers and sisters will be excited about putting faith into action.
Please join Tearfund in their prayer challenge against global poverty. They are praying for 50 million people to come out of the grips of poverty in 10 years (8 years left now).

A Story of Moon Cakes -- by Susie Cheung

The story starts with a small parcel of 'moon cakes' ...

Shortly after my arrival in Cyprus last year, I received a small parcel with two moon cakes from the Hong Kong Mission office. I thought, "Mid-Autumn Festival must be near." However, as I was afraid of high cholesterol, I gave away the cakes to a young Chinese missionary family but kept the box. For almost 20 years while I was in Sudan, the festival passed me by quietly most of the time, unknowingly.

Not the gift, but the heart
To me, it is not so much the gift, but the heart that counts. It is like dining out with friends. What is eaten may be forgotten, yet the Christian fellowship adds to one's spices of life, making it very tasty and meaningful.

'Prisoner of own culture'
A lecturer once said, "We are all prisoners of our own cultures". On mission field, more and more multi-cultural teams are forming. This is good since God has created different nationalities. Hence, to insist, for example, eating rice with chopsticks is right while using hand to hold the rice is 'bad behaviour' ,is thus inappropriate.

Kingdom principle above cultural 'norms'
It is better to be in peace with fellow missionaries for unimportant matters, yet uphold the kingdom principle at all times. Unfortunately, this does not happen all the time.

"How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God's people to live together in harmony !"-- Psalm 133:1

Please pray for your missionaries! Wishing you a good Mid-Autumn Festival !

A Letter for the Fathers on Father's Day

-- Pastor James Lau

Blessings to you all on Father's Day. It is indeed God's grace that one can be a father.

In this festive time, I was reminded of the essay, "Shadow", by Zhu Ziqing*, where the words depicted fatherly love beautifully and which reminds me of my own father who sadly passed away two years ago. I remember how he did his best to tenderly nurture me through my studies. Even though he never said "I love you", I am certain that he loved me very much. I will always remember him, and be thankful to our Lord for him.

In Psalm 127:3, it says, "Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him." If children are the inheritance from God, we shall gently guard and nurture them; and if children are rewards from God, we shall then appreciate and love them. Although I am currently thousands of miles away from my two children, the distance is surely not a deterrence of our love. I pray for blessings on them and I encourage and remind them over the phone.

The theme for our church this year is "Empowerment for the Task". Pray that our fathers would humble themselves and come before our Lord God, through which one can be aware of their shortcomings and reflect on their weaknesses, and hence be empowered by God's strength and be a father who pleases God. I sincerely invite you, the fathers, to commit once again before God on this Father's Day:-

1) Pray a "Prodigal Son's prayer" - "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son."… Repent and reconcile with our heavenly Father, wrap in His love and acceptance, be empowered and once again turn to your children with a father's heart.
2) Shoulder on a father's responsibility - Follow the teaching from Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" through teaching and being an example to your children, guard them to follow the teaching in the Bible to be able to know right from wrong, and live out the biblical principles in their daily lives.
3) Be a blessing to your children - Pray ceaselessly for your children, care and encourage them in their daily living, actively seek opportunities to spend quality time with them and nurture them with your witness.

Fathers, may our Heavenly Father and His love be with you always.

These are our church logos for the yearly themes, "Rice on Fire" and "Empowerment for the Task" for 2008, "Friendship with God in Prayer" for 2009 and "Inspired through the Word" for 2010.

The logos use the image of hands to represent the seven congregations of CCiL. It also carries a corporate message of Christian unity and mutual support, which our Church will need in the journey of empowerment.

The hands can lead, help, serve, give, receive, comfort and offer friendship. The radiant yellow and red represents the growth of rice and the burning of fire.
